A recent study by the California Office of Highway Traffic Safety found that just under one in ten drivers are willing to use their cars to block the path of a motorcyclist for various reasons.

So how many of them are willing to take that attitude to the next level and collide with or veer into the path of a rider?

A quick search of the internet shows the wretched – and inexcusable – truth. All of the following incidents occurred within the last 30 days, and I stopped searching as my outrage and disgust grew to vein-popping levels.

Elon Jack “E.J.” Potter, age 71, of Ithaca, MI, passed away Monday, April 30, 2012, at Rosewood Adult Foster Care, Gratiot County, MI, and with his passing, the world of motorcycling lost a legendary character. A memorial service will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes Ithaca Chapel Ithaca, MI on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at 3 p.m., and the service will give anyone who loves motorcycles, wrenching and madness a chance to pay their final respects to a man who did all those things with style.

Okay, you’ve gone and done it.

You left the key in the ignition of your bike with the parking lights on. Maybe you tried too many attempts to crank the engine over and now you have a problem – your battery is no more.

If you happen to have one, you can kick-start you bike in this worst-case scenario, but make sure you have it out of gear or you’ll blow out a hip or a 

knee and still be sitting by the side of the road.

Even is you have an electric-start-only bike, you still have a shot at getting her back on the road and on the way to the dealership for some fresh lead and acid.
